The top of the table clash finally arrived in mid April! Wardens won the toss and wisely chose to kick uphill. The bobbly surface was not condusive to passing football, nevertheless this was a high quality game. Early on it was Norton that exerted pressure and a Noah free kick struck the bar full on. Kenilworth were solid at the back and dealt well with a series of long throws into the box. A series of flicks fom Connor and James came to nothing and Norton were restricted to efforts from range. Throughout this Eddie and Max were alert to extremely fast counter attacking from Wardens. HT 0-0.
Down the hill Wardens had more territory and a powerful shot was brilliantly turned around the post from Niall. From the ensuing well delivered corner a powerful shot was hammered into the roof of the Norton net. 1-0.
Being behind is unfamiliar but Norton responded well, Josh came on and Olly began to create space down the right, one run resulting in an excellent shot which the Wardens keeper did well to turn around the post for a corner. Half chances were created but were flashed wide. Norton went one at the back in search of the equaliser but with the game open in the dying minutes it was Wardens who forced the game and were only denied a second by a last ditch tackle. FT 1-0.
Despite the defeat, lots of positives can be taken from this game, all the players involved in can be rightfully proud of themselves. Post match Noah commented that it was this game that he had enjoyed most all season- surely that is what it is all about. Still all to play for!!
